The Sarnia community is in a state of shock today, April 10, 2026, following a tragic shooting at Lambton College that claimed the life of a young man and left two others injured. What was meant to be a night of celebration at a sanctioned student event turned into a “profound tragedy” that has prompted an active homicide investigation.

The Incident

Just before 1:00 a.m. on Friday, April 10, Sarnia Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Lions Den Pub and Grill, an on-campus bar at Lambton College’s Main Campus. The shooting occurred during a Student Administrative Council (SAC) event.+1

Upon arrival, emergency responders located three victims. One individual, later identified as 20-year-old Dane Nisbet of Sarnia, was rushed to Bluewater Health with life-threatening injuries but was tragically pronounced dead. The two other victims, described as young adults, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.+2

The Investigation

The Sarnia Police Service has characterized the investigation as a homicide—the first in the city for 2026. As of Friday evening, here is the current status of the probe:

  • Suspect Status: No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Police are interviewing a large number of witnesses who were present at the pub.+1
  • Motive: Authorities stated there is no evidence to suggest the college was a specific target or that the incident was politically motivated.
  • Forensics: A heavy police presence remains at the scene. The Emergency Response Team and K9 units were deployed following the initial call to search for weapons and suspects.+1

Remembering Dane Nisbet

The victim, Dane Nisbet, was a well-known figure in the local sports community. A talented hockey player, Nisbet had played for several local programs including:

  • North Middlesex Stars (PJHL)
  • Sarnia Legionnaires
  • Lambton Jr. Sting U18
  • Mooretown Flags

Friends and teammates have begun sharing tributes online, mourning the loss of a young man described as a dedicated athlete and a friend to many.

Campus Closure & Support

In response to the violence, Lambton College officials immediately closed the Sarnia Main Campus for all of Friday, April 10. This closure includes:

  • Main Campus classes and services
  • Fire School
  • Skilled Trades Training Centre
  • EarlyON Child & Family Centre

“This loss is a profound tragedy. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence,” the college stated in a social media update.

Support Resources: The college is urging students and staff to access mental health support through the Counselling & Wellness department and the Employee and Family Assistance Plan.
