Interactive Vehicle Wiring Lab

Operate the circuit, watch current paths change and diagnose faults with a digital multimeter.

Interactive automotive headlight and fog-light circuit Battery power flows through fuses and relays to low beams, high beams and fog lamps. A high-beam cutout relay opens the fog-relay ground control circuit. +12 VOLTBATTERYB1 POWER CENTRELOW 15AHIGH 15AFOG 15A LOW RELAY30878586 HIGH RELAY30878586 FOG RELAY30878586 FOG CUTOUT3087a878685 LOW BEAMS HIGH BEAMS FOG LAMPS DRIVER CONTROLSDIMMERFOG TP1 B+ TP2 B− TP3 LOW FEED TP4 HIGH FEED TP5 LAMP GROUND TP6 FOG FEED TP7 CHASSIS BLACK LEAD RED LEAD
Guided lesson

Why voltage on the ground side exposes a bad ground

1

Establish a loaded circuit

Turn the headlights on and leave low beam selected. A voltage-drop test must be performed while current is flowing.

30

Relay common

Usually the power feed entering the switched side of an ISO relay.

87

Normally open

Connected to terminal 30 only after the relay coil is energized.

87a

Normally closed

Connected to terminal 30 while the relay is relaxed. The fog cutout uses this path.

85/86

Relay coil

Current through the coil creates magnetism that moves the contact arm.

Hands-on wiring bench

Relay-controlled work lamp

Connect the terminals to create a safe relay-controlled lamp circuit. Select one terminal, then another, to install a wire.

Component tray

Click a component to add it to the bench.

Add the required components from the tray.
DVOM safety

Choose the measurement before connecting

DC voltage is measured in parallel with the powered circuit. The meter has high internal resistance and applies very little load.

ISO relay school

Operate a five-terminal relay

308787a8586

At rest, 30 connects to 87a. When the coil is energized, the arm moves and 30 connects to 87.

These are teaching guidelines, not universal service specifications.

Testing rule

Load the circuit

A high-resistance connection may pass enough current for a DVOM to display system voltage with the load disconnected. Operate the load and measure voltage drop across the suspect path.
