Recalled Cheese

Canada Cheese Recall: Listeria Alert

Across Canada, a significant food safety alert has been issued involving multiple brands of cheese and prepared meal kits. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched an extensive recall due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

As of April 2026, this investigation is active and expanding. Whether you are a meal-kit subscriber or a weekend charcuterie enthusiast, here is everything you need to know to stay safe.

🧀 The Recall at a Glance: Affected Brands

The recall covers a wide spectrum of dairy products, from shredded blends used in restaurants to specialty imported cheeses.

1. Major Retail & Institutional Brands

Several national and regional brands have been flagged. If you have any of the following in your fridge, check the batch codes immediately:

  • Bothwell: Shredded Three Cheese Nacho Blend (400 g and 1 kg).
  • Paradise Island: Various shredded products, including Asiago.
  • Goldstream / Goldstream EZ Melt: Primarily sold to hotels, restaurants, and institutions (Cheddar, Nacho Mix, Parmesan, and Mozzarella styles).
  • Other Notable Brands: Western Family, Only Goodness, Reliance, and GDE (Grocery Delivery E-Services).

2. Meal Kit Services (HelloFresh & Chefs Plate)

Perhaps the most widespread impact for home cooks is the inclusion of these cheeses in popular meal kits. The recall includes:

  • HelloFresh & Chefs Plate: Shredded Parmesan, Cheese Curds, Feta, Goat Cheese, and Mozzarella included as individual components within meal kits.

3. Specialty Imports

  • Auricchio: Gorgonzola DOP Dolce and Taleggio D.O.P. (distributed primarily in Ontario and Quebec).

⚠️ Why Listeria is Dangerous

Listeria monocytogenes is a hardy bacterium that can survive—and even grow—in cold temperatures, like those in your refrigerator.

Important: Contaminated food may not look, smell, or taste spoiled. You cannot rely on your senses to detect its presence.

Symptoms to Watch For

If you have consumed these products, monitor your health for the following:

  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Persistent fever and muscle aches
  • Severe headache and neck stiffness

High-Risk Groups

While healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms, Listeria is life-threatening for:

  • Pregnant Women: Can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth.
  • Seniors & Immunocompromised: Can lead to severe meningitis or blood infections.

📋 What You Should Do Now

If you suspect you have a recalled product, follow these steps immediately:

  1. Check the UPC and Codes: Visit the CFIA Recall Portal for the specific “Best Before” dates and UPC codes associated with this recall.
  2. Stop Consumption: Do not eat, serve, or give the product to pets.
  3. Dispose or Return: Throw the cheese away in a sealed bag or return it to the retailer where it was purchased for a full refund.
  4. Sanitize Your Fridge: If a recalled product was sitting open in your fridge, wash the shelves and drawers with a solution of 1 tablespoon of unscented bleach to 1 gallon of water.
  5. Consult a Doctor: If you feel ill and believe you ate a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

🔍 How Did This Happen?

This recall was triggered by CFIA test results and an ongoing food safety investigation. The agency is currently verifying that the industry is removing these products from the marketplace. As the investigation continues, more products—including salads and prepared items using these cheeses—may be added to the list.
