Artemis II: Hansen’s Lunar Journey

The successful return of Artemis II on April 10, 2026, marks the end of a ten-day journey that did more than just break records—it rekindled humanity’s direct connection to the Moon. At the heart of this triumph was Colonel Jeremy Hansen, whose presence on the mission turned a historic American milestone into a global achievement.

Hansen’s journey wasn’t just a flight; it was the ultimate test of the systems that will eventually sustain a permanent human presence on the lunar surface.


The Canadian Pioneer: Colonel Jeremy Hansen

A veteran pilot of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Jeremy Hansen waited 15 years for his first flight into space. His selection as Mission Specialist made him the first non-American to ever leave Earth’s orbit.

Throughout the mission, Hansen acted as a bridge between the technical and the terrestrial. While his crewmates managed the complex flight systems of the Orion capsule, Hansen’s expertise in geology and his role as a “rookie” veteran allowed him to communicate the sheer awe of the lunar landscape to a global audience with fresh eyes.


10 Days in Deep Space: The Mission Breakdown

The Artemis II flight path was a high-stakes “Free Return Trajectory,” designed to use the Moon’s gravity to slingshot the crew back home safely.

Phase 1: High Earth Orbit (HEO)

After launching from Kennedy Space Center on April 1, the crew spent the first 24 hours in a massive elliptical orbit. This was a critical “go/no-go” window where they tested the Orion’s life support systems and performed manual piloting maneuvers—essentially practicing how to dock with the future Lunar Gateway.

Phase 2: The Lunar Flyby

On April 6, 2026, the crew reached the far side of the Moon.

  • The View: Passing roughly 10,300 km above the lunar surface, Hansen and the crew captured high-definition imagery of the Shackleton Crater and the South Pole—the intended landing site for future missions.
  • The Distance: They traveled further into deep space than any humans in history, reaching a point roughly 400,000 km from Earth.

Phase 3: The Re-Entry

The mission concluded on April 10 with a high-speed re-entry. Orion hit the atmosphere at nearly 40,000 km/h, testing the heat shield against temperatures reaching 2,760°C before splashing down safely in the Pacific.


Mission Significance: The Technical Blueprint

Artemis II was the final hurdle before humanity attempts to walk on the Moon again. It proved three vital things:

  1. Human Resilience: The crew remained healthy and productive despite the high-radiation environment of deep space.
  2. Orion’s Reliability: The spacecraft’s communication, navigation, and life support functioned flawlessly over 2.2 million kilometers of travel.
  3. International Unity: The presence of a Canadian astronaut solidified the partnership between NASA and the CSA, proving that the Moon is a destination for all of humanity.

The Legacy of Artemis II

As Jeremy Hansen and his crewmates—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch—return to their families, they leave behind a world that is now ready for Artemis III.

Because of this mission, we no longer have to wonder if our technology can handle the trip. We know it can. The “Artemis Generation” has transitioned from dreaming about the Moon to actively preparing to live on it. For Canada, and for the world, Jeremy Hansen’s seat on that capsule was a signal: the door to the solar system is finally open.
